Burn out and slowing down

Slowing down isn’t celebrated in our capitalist culture. It has real costs.

For example, when professional tennis player Naomi Osaka decided not to attend press conferences.  She made the decision to support her mental health during the French Open.  Officials said they would fine her if she followed through.  In the end she decided to withdraw completely from the competition to focus on her mental health.

Or the way earnings for women fall an average of $1,861 in the first quarter after giving birth. This figure is relative to pre-birth earnings. And how it takes women five quarters after giving birth to recover pre-birth pay levels. Most shocking of all, researchers say women don’t return to their pre-birth earnings paths.

I know the impact of slowing down first hand.  I’ve taken two breaks from my podcast in the past two years.  Each time I’ve taken a break, my listenership drops and takes months to regain. And I took a massive income hit after suffering a miscarriage this March. Needing time away from clients and teaching to heal.

We can’t hide from the fact that our capitalist system devalues slowing down or taking a break.

But not slowing down has even greater costs to our wellbeing. And choosing to slow down...greater rewards.

On this week’s episode of Tune In with Marci, I’m exploring burnout and the call to slow down.

I discuss:

  • What is burnout and what are the symptoms?

  • The often missed spiritual symptoms of burnout.

  • How slowing down replenishes our mind, body, and spirit.

  • 4 ways our spirit can support us when we rest.

  • And a practice to develop your personalized plan to slow down.

Much love,

Marci
